Character Background:

Arjen was born in the Lower East Side to Elka and Koen Vandenberg a pair of dual nationality dutch immigrants, who had managed to earn themselves a decent living in the rebuilt New York. His father was a well-regarded senior SWAT team member and a lifetime military man, who had managed to climb his way up the promotion ladder on merit rather than skulduggery. It was the elder Vandenberg that instilled in his son a set of moral values of duty and integrity that would stay with Arjen throughout his life. It would seem that he was due to follow in his father's footsteps into the fledging ADP but fate was to deal a cruel blow.

Just after he turned 16, Koen was killed by a rampaging cyberpunk who had finally fallen over the edge into full-blown psychosis. The family was faced with a stark choice, to move out of their home or Arjen would have to find a job. This played him straight into the hands of Lucien Lockheart, an ambitious young executive in Europacorp who needed ambitious recruits as part of a "Security Team". In exchange for a 5-year non-disclosure agreement and waiver, he would protect the interests of Europacorp all over the world. This often meant fighting in brushfire wars all over the planet. The one recompense was that he managed to earn enough to secure a safe future for his family.

After 4 years though, he was becoming weary. From within the confines of his Madox suit one day would just blur into the next and he was having a crisis of conscience over what his team was supposed to be achieving. Lockheart was sending his team on ever more dangerous missions, it was only a matter of time before something had to give. That day came during an evacuation in Cambodia, when Lucien withheld vital intelligence. By the time the rescue team found the squad, there were not enough pieces left to make a full body. Arjen's mutilated torso was kept alive only by the Madox's life support system and his extraordinary force of will.

Next came the long and painful rehabilitation and rebuild. His entire body was replaced with a cybernetic combat chassis, however he was now a liability to the corp. He was given a token severance package and politely shown the door. He never looked back. Looking up some of his father's old contacts he applied to the ADP, despite initial misgivings about his long-term psychological health he was accepted. Arjen or "Dutch" to his colleagues swiftly garnered a reputation as a hard-nosed officer, who would use every rule in the book to get justice no matter how lofty the perpetrator.
